“Ah, I suspected you’d rather not get sweaty and dirty.”
Her voice had a teasing lilt to it. Clay unbuttoned the top of her blouse. “We’ll get sweaty, I promise. Then we can try out my new shower.”
He carried her back into the bedroom and set her feet on the plush carpet. “I’ve been waiting all day to see what you were wearing under these clothes.” He had her blouse off in a few seconds and her boots and jeans quickly followed.
She wore a light-pink lacy bra and bikini panties. He stood back, admiring her curves. “I never expected you’d be the fancy lingerie type.”
“Why not? I’m not sure whether to be insulted or pleased.”
“In the office you dressed rather plainly. I got my first surprise when I picked you up on our date, between your outfit and no glasses, I saw you in a different light. And also your kiss earlier that day had contributed to my altered opinion.” He removed her glasses. “Why didn’t you wear your contact yesterday or today?”
“I knew we’d be gone a long time today. I’m not up to wearing it for more than four hours yet. That’s why I didn’t wear it on the plane.”
“I love looking into your gorgeous eyes.” He kissed her on the corner of each eyelid. Clay cupped her face in his hands and his lips brushed across her cheeks, and along the sides of her face and jaw. “You have incredible skin,” he whispered before he captured her mouth with his. He licked the line between her lips and her mouth opened. His tongue leisurely explored the interior, tasting, and then his tongue raked along the underside of hers.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and he lifted her legs. Her crotch rubbed against the bulge in his jeans.
He pushed her back to the wall and ravished her mouth while she rubbed her pussy area hard over his cock.
When he came up for breath, her dazzling smile warmed him through and through. “I need to get out of my clothes.” He sat her feet on the floor. “Don’t move.”
Susie watched as he tore off his shirt and yanked his boots and pants off. He reached in his jeans pocket and got out a condom package. Clay opened it and handed the condom to her. “Roll it on me.”
She rubbed her finger across the glistening tip and tasted his essence. Then she slid the condom over the crown and down. When she glanced at him, he kissed her and reached behind to unfasten her bra.
“I like lacy underwear on you for a few minutes. But then I want to take it off.” After he removed her panties, he lifted her onto the bed.
He had a voracious desire to be entangled with her. She spread her arms wide and when he laid on her, she wrapped her legs around his hips.
“Not so fast, my darlin’. I want to explore your body.” He bowed his head toward her.

The soft expression on his face touched a spot deep inside her. Then his breath blew across her neck, and she shivered with delight.
Her pussy gushed with her juices and coated her lower lips. She wanted him to touch her more intimately. As though he read her mind, he put a finger inside her pussy opening while he continued to kiss her neck. When he added two fingers and brushed across her G-spot, she arched her back and moaned.
“I need you inside me, Clay.”
“In time. You’re like a delectable feast and I’m starting with the hors d’oeuvres.”
He progressed downward to her breasts where he cupped one in each hand. Clay brushed his mouth across each nipple and watched as they tightened.
Susie slipped her hands past him. Then she rubbed his nipples and along his six-pack. She heard the catch in his breath. He raised his head and looked at her. His eyes brimmed with desire and some undefinable emotion.
“It’s not fair for you to have all the fun.” Susie’s voice sounded raspy. “I want to touch you more.”
Clay rolled on his back. “Enjoy yourself, darlin’.”
She straddled his hips and stared at his tanned, well-muscled chest. Her fingers tweaked his nipples and his eyes smoldered with a spark of fire glowing deep inside. His breathing quickened.
Susie bent over him where her nipples brushed the hair on his chest. Her lips kissed where his shoulder and neck met. His pulse pounded against her mouth. Gradually, she moved upward and scraped her teeth over his hard jaw. Touching him was like an aphrodisiac. Her desire swirled in her veins.
“I believe you’re making a wanton woman of me,” she purred in his ear and raked her teeth across his earlobe.
Chuckling, Clay rolled and had her under him. “Wanton, what an old-fashioned word for lusty, sensual, mischievous.”
He kissed her breast and sucked on her nipple. Her pussy clenched. She was hungry to feel him deep inside, filling her to the brim with his hard cock.
Clay kissed her soft abdomen and moved closer to her lower lips. Then he took a deep breath. “I love the scent of your arousal.” His fingers separated her folds and uncovered her most sensitive spot. His tongue licked across her clit. “You taste like ambrosia.”
His mouth and tongue worked magic against her pussy lips. A consuming blaze of heat lit in her core and spilled outward. Her desire spiraled higher and higher until she begged him to put his cock in her pussy.
When he thrust inside, she screamed out his name and shook from head to toe from the wild euphoria zipping up her body.
Desire had made his face look like a warrior, cheekbones sculpted and mouth tight, raw lust glittered in his eyes.
He slowed his thrust and gasped for breath. His pupils had dilated, and his face flushed as he spoke in a hoarse voice. “Making love with you is like a tidal wave knocking me down and throwing me around.”
“Is that bad?” she asked.
He kissed her. “I don’t know.”
Susie raised her hips taking his cock inside her pussy as deep as possible. “Don’t think, feel.”

His hunger was so great for her that he followed her lead. Although all types of warnings were going off in his head. Her sweet, wet, hot pussy wrapped around his cock and a deep contentment and joy seeped inside him. While his mind said, no, no, no, his body didn’t listen.
Passion and pleasure mixed and rolled from his center outward. He stared into her dark purple eyes as he went over the crest of the wave.
Susie yelled his name and it heightened his joy. Her pussy clenched tight then rippled around him as she held on tight.
When their breathing had slowed and their heart rate had returned to normal, Clay raised himself on one elbow and looked at Susie. “I don’t know what to do with you.”
“I’m my own person. You don’t have to do anything with me except feed me the steak you mentioned. I’m starved.”
His lips curled in a sensuous smile. “I’ll start the grill.” He pulled on his jeans, leaving the button unfastened. Then he kissed her, and headed out the door. “You can wear my robe if you like.” He winked and left.

Susie had thought he looked handsome in his suit, but dressed in unfastened jeans and nothing else, he was the sexiest man she’d ever seen. In his closet she reached for his dark-blue robe. His scent of sandalwood and musk and his own special maleness permeated the silky material.
No, she’d leave him wanting more. Susie showered quickly and dressed. Then she joined Clay on the patio outside the kitchen door.
He frowned. “You dressed.”
“I don’t want to arrive at your mother’s real late.”
“The fire’s starting. I threw two potatoes in the oven. Do you mind mixing a salad? There are ingredients for one in the fridge.”
“I’d enjoy helping.” She walked back inside the kitchen. When she leaned in for the lettuce and other vegetables, Clay reached around her and got out a chilled bottle of wine.
“I’ll open this. We can drink a glass while our dinner cooks.”
She looked from him to the wine bottle. “You won’t change my mind about leaving after dinner.”
Clay grinned. “One can only hope.”
Chapter Eleven
Susie called and arranged to meet the realtor at her office. Clay told her he’d be looking for furniture today, and he hadn’t asked her along.
I’m glad I didn’t relent last night and stay. I’d be even more disappointed that he’s excluding me from his shopping.
“So you’re considering opening a bookstore in Frontier city,” Mrs. Brodie said.
“Yes. I’m excited about having my own business, and the realtor said it should be popular with the local ladies.” Then she told Mrs. Brodie the ideas she’d gotten from visiting Wagon Wheel. “It should help business if the town is more attractive. It’s a nice place, but looks like nothing’s changed in the last hundred years.”
“I don’t think it has, and most of the men on the council have been here almost that long. They’ll fight the idea of any modifications.”
“I’m going to stir up a hornet’s nest. I’m attending their next meeting. I understand it’s this Thursday.”
“I love it. I can’t wait to see their faces. You’ll need backup. I’ll call my daughters-in-law. We’ll fill the seats of the small courthouse.”
“That’d be great. Would you like to go with me and meet the realtor? She’ll take us to see the office. You can tell me what you think.”
“I’d like to join you. I’ll comb my hair, and we can be on our way.”
Susie cleaned the dishes and wiped the table while she waited.
Mrs. Brodie came to the doorway. “I would have taken care of those dishes when we got back.”
“You like a clean kitchen. It’s done.”
Mrs. Brodie smiled at her. “You’re going to make me a wonderful daughter-in-law.”
“Don’t count on it. Clay has his mind set on staying single.”
“I wonder why. I’ll ask him.”
“Please don’t. He’ll think I put you up to it.”
“Don’t worry. Let’s go see where you’re going to open a bookstore.”
The realtor introduced herself to Susie. “I realized we hadn’t exchanged names yesterday. I’m Samantha Herring. Good morning, Mrs. Brodie.”
“I’m tagging along. I want to see this shop.”
“I’ll take the two of you in my car.”
They rode from the realtor’s office to the shop on the main street. Susie and Mrs. Brodie wandered around inside.
“This big room can be divided into two sections with one corner having the tea and pastries and a few chairs to sit in. Later, you might sell fresh breads and cakes, that sort of thing,” Mrs. Brodie said. “I like to bake. I’d bake some for you and we can split the profit.”
“I don’t expect you to work for me. Clay would have my head.”
“Nonsense. I’ve been lonely since Sam moved out. I’ve tried to think of something I could do part-time. This is perfect, if you don’t mind.”
“No. It would be great. Can we see the upstairs apartment?” Susie asked.
Samantha led them out the backdoor. “The stairs are right here.” When they’d climbed to the small porch, she unlocked the door to let them inside.
There was a nice-size kitchen, a small dining area and a medium-size living room. Off the living room was a bedroom and bath. Some of the windows looked out on the town and some toward the mountains.
“It’s just what I need.” Susie said.
Mrs. Brodie touched her arm. “You can stay with me as long as you want.”
“I appreciate your offer, but I’ve never had the chance to be on my own. It’s time. I guess we’d better go back to your office and talk money,” Susie said to Samantha.
When Samantha walked with them into the realty office, she motioned for them to follow her down a hallway. Mrs. Brodie stopped in the foyer.
“I’ll wait here while you talk business.” She pulled Susie aside. “I’d be happy to put money into your shop, if you need an investor.”
“I’ll remember your offer when I’m ready to expand.”
Mrs. Brodie grinned. “I love to see a positive attitude. I’ll be ready.”
Susie hoped she wasn’t being overconfident. She had some money saved and her share of the inheritance she and her sister received from their grandmother. She’d been sixteen and had put it away for something special. This was the time to use it.
When they left the realtor’s office, Susie had the keys to both the shop and the apartment. “I’ll treat you to lunch at Millie’s,” Susie said to Mrs. Brodie. “I want to ask her some questions about doing business in this town.”
“She’s the expert. When her husband died in a farming accident, she had a daughter and son to support on her own.” Mrs. Brodie got in her car and they headed to Millie’s. “She opened her restaurant, and it’s been a favorite spot for the town and most of the county. My boys and Grace have loved going here since they were small. Millie’s watched them all grow up.”
They were greeted at the door by Millie. She walked them back to a booth. Mrs. Brodie started to introduce Susie.
“Clay brought her in to eat yesterday. How do you like Frontier City?”
“I like it enough that I’m going into business. As I mentioned yesterday, I’d like to discuss how you got started sometime when you’re not working.”
“A new business is good news as long as you aren’t opening another restaurant.” Millie’s eyes twinkled. “Just kidding.”
“I’m going to have a bookstore.”
“It’s about time. I love to read, and I hate having to drive to Wagon Wheel when I can’t find a new book in our library. Although since Gina took over, there’s a better selection.”
Susie told her where her shop would be located and how she planned to have, books, magazines, tea and pastries. Then she discussed her hope to see the town dressed up with flowers and shade trees.
“You’ve chosen an excellent spot for your business. As questions come up just come by here and we’ll discuss them. I’ll be at the meeting on Thursday, too. In fact, I’ll call around and get lots of women there. We’ve sat around too long and let the men run this town.”
Susie got excited. Her plans were going better than she expected. Millie took their order and excused herself.
They were waiting for their meal when Clay walked in with a tall blonde. Susie’s heart dropped to her stomach. Mrs. Brodie glanced around to see why Susie had moved to the opposite end of the booth.
“Who is she?” Susie asked.
“An old friend. They went to high school together. She was two years behind him. Don’t let him see it bothers you. Millie will tell him we’re here.”
Susie swallowed around the lump in her throat and nodded to Mrs. Brodie. His mother was right. He and his friend were walking in their direction.
Susie whispered, “Don’t tell him what we’ve been doing in town.”
“I won’t.” Mrs. Brodie winked.
“Mom and Suzette, what are you two doing here?” Clay asked. He eyed Susie with suspicion.
“I got bored and Susie offered to treat me to lunch.”
“Bored?”
“Yes, Clay, occasionally it gets lonely around the house. Introduce Gloria to Susie.”
Clay introduced Gloria. She looked down her nose at Susie and smiled arrogantly.
“Hi. Clay said he had a secretary working for him temporarily.” She smiled graciously to Mrs. Brodie. “It’s nice to see you.”
“I didn’t know you were in town, Gloria.”
“I’m considering moving home. And”—she glanced at Clay and rubbed his arm—“since Clay is going to be here permanently, I’m even more interested in making a change.”
“I ran into Gloria shopping. She helped me choose a few items. We’re hungry. We’d better go to the table Millie’s holding for us.” He nodded to them and walked on around the room to an empty booth.
Their food came and it was hot and good, but Susie only ate part of hers. Millie gave her a carry-home bag and they left.
When they got to the ranch, Mrs. Brodie
turned in the seat. “I’m sorry, Susie.”
“It’s fine. I scare him, so he’s going to be with a woman who doesn’t. But I’m not giving up. I’m taking a break. Is there a horse in the barn I can ride?”
“Sure. I’ll call Sam. He’ll fix you up.”
“I don’t want to bother him.”
“It’s no trouble.” Clay’s mom pushed one number on her cell. “Sam, where are you on the ranch? In the corral by the barn? Good. I’m sending Susie your way. She wants to ride.”
Mrs. Brodie clicked off her phone. “Follow this road about a half-mile. You can’t miss the barn.” She got out and waved as Susie drove off.
* * * *
As Mrs. Brodie expected, Clay arrived at her house not too long after they’d gotten home. “Did you finish your meal?” she asked.
“Yes. Gloria stayed in town. She had her car. Where’s Suzette?”
“Quit calling her Suzette. No one else does. I think you do it to keep distance between you. At first, I thought, as we all did, that it was special for the two of you. But it isn’t. She’s Susie, a perfectly good name.”
He sat in one of the living room chairs and leaned his head back. “You like her.”
“I do, very much.”
“Why?”
“Why not?”
“I’m not going to marry her.”
“I agree. You certainly aren’t acting like a man in love. But tell me why is marriage so repugnant to you. Your father and I had a good marriage and your siblings glow with happiness. Don’t you want the same?”
“I’m a loner. I like my personal space. During my earlier engagement, when Priscilla started wanting to stay over, I realized marrying wasn’t for me. I couldn’t visualize spending all my time with her or any woman for that matter.”
“I can understand with Priscilla. She was snobbish and cold.”
“You never told me you didn’t like her.”
“She was your choice. I tried to see what you saw in her. I must admit I was happy when you broke off the engagement. But why have you refused to consider any other woman as a wife?”
